Russia’s Strategic Move Puts Jewar Airport in the Global Spotlight

India’s capital, New Delhi, is hosting the 18th BRICS Summit, bringing some of the world’s most powerful leaders and delegations to the country.

While global attention remains focused on the visit of Chinese President Xi Jinping and other international leaders, Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to India has also attracted significant attention.

But an interesting development took place even before President Putin arrived in India.

Russia Chooses Jewar Airport for Its Security Operations

As part of the arrangements surrounding President Putin’s visit, Russian military transport aircraft reportedly landed at Noida International Airport (Jewar) in Uttar Pradesh instead of using Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport.

Among the aircraft was the Russian Ilyushin Il-76, a large military transport aircraft. Additional Russian aircraft were also reportedly involved in transporting advance personnel and equipment connected with the presidential visit.

The development has placed Jewar Airport in the international spotlight.

Why Is Jewar Airport Important?

For a newly developed international airport, handling high-profile international operations is a major milestone.

The use of Jewar Airport for Russian logistical and security operations highlights its runway capability, connectivity, security arrangements and strategic location near Delhi.

President Putin’s primary VIP aircraft, however, reportedly operated through Delhi’s IGI Airport, while supporting logistics and advance arrangements were handled through Jewar.

This arrangement also helped manage the additional air-traffic and security requirements associated with a major international summit.

Russian Security Equipment and Convoy

Reports surrounding the operation have also drawn attention to the equipment transported by Russian military aircraft.

Such aircraft can be used to move advance security personnel, communications equipment, logistical systems and vehicles required for the movement of a visiting head of state.

The presence of Russian military transport aircraft at Jewar therefore represents more than an ordinary aviation operation. It demonstrates the airport’s potential to handle sensitive and high-security international movements.

Uttar Pradesh and India-Russia Defence Cooperation

The development also brings attention to the growing importance of Uttar Pradesh in India-Russia defence cooperation.

Uttar Pradesh is already home to major defence manufacturing projects involving Russian technology and Indian industrial participation.

The BrahMos missile manufacturing facility in Lucknow and the AK-203 rifle project in Amethi are two prominent examples of India-Russia defence cooperation in the state.

These projects have strengthened Uttar Pradesh’s position as an emerging defence manufacturing hub.

A Major Moment for Jewar Airport

The reported arrival of Russian military transport aircraft has given Jewar Airport considerable international attention.

For Uttar Pradesh, the development represents an important moment for its infrastructure and aviation ambitions.

Jewar’s strategic location, modern infrastructure and proximity to the national capital make it an important addition to the Delhi-NCR aviation network.

The operation connected three major areas — international diplomacy, aviation infrastructure and defence cooperation — putting Uttar Pradesh and Jewar Airport firmly in the spotlight.

The Bigger Picture

The BRICS Summit is not only about meetings between world leaders. Major international events also test a country’s infrastructure, security coordination and logistical capabilities.

The reported use of Jewar Airport for Russian security and logistical operations has therefore generated significant interest.

Whether viewed from the perspective of aviation, diplomacy or defence manufacturing, Jewar is emerging as an important strategic asset for the region.
