Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh: A major alleged currency fraud involving a Punjab National Bank (PNB) currency chest in Saharanpur has raised serious questions over banking security and cash-handling procedures. The investigation began after the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) reportedly detected a shortage while checking a consignment of currency notes sent from the bank's currency chest.
According to information emerging from the investigation, the value of suspected fake currency recovered from the currency chest has increased significantly during the ongoing counting and verification process. The initial figure mentioned in the FIR was around ₹7.40 crore, while subsequent checking reportedly brought the total value of suspected counterfeit notes to approximately ₹17.29 crore.
How Did the Case Come to Light?
The matter came to light after a large consignment of soiled and damaged currency notes was sent to the RBI for examination and counting.
During the process, a shortage of approximately ₹4.36 lakh was reportedly detected. This discrepancy prompted an internal inquiry by the bank.
When the investigation team began examining the currency chest and its records in greater detail, suspected counterfeit notes were reportedly discovered among the currency stored there.
The discovery raised a much larger question: how did such a large quantity of suspected fake currency enter a secured bank currency chest?
Suspected Fake Currency Found During Counting
The initial investigation reportedly identified approximately ₹7.40 crore worth of suspected counterfeit ₹500 notes.
As the counting and verification process continued, investigators reportedly examined bundles containing ₹100 and ₹200 denomination notes as well. Additional suspected fake notes were allegedly found during this process.
As a result, the figure being examined in the investigation reportedly increased to approximately ₹17.29 crore.
However, the final amount is yet to be officially established because the detailed counting, verification and investigation are still underway.
Bank Initiates Internal Investigation
Bank officials have stated that the matter is currently under detailed investigation and that no final conclusion can be drawn until the investigation report is completed.
The bank has also taken disciplinary action against several employees as part of its immediate response.
According to statements attributed to bank officials, a part-time sweeper was initially suspended. Subsequently, officials associated with the currency chest were also suspended following the emergence of the suspected counterfeit currency case.
The bank has maintained that the involvement or responsibility of individual employees will be established only after completion of the detailed investigation.
Four People Named in the Case
According to the information available from the investigation, four individuals have been named in connection with the case.
Authorities are examining the roles and responsibilities of the people associated with the currency chest and related operations.
Officials have emphasized that suspension or being named in the investigation does not by itself establish guilt. The exact role of each individual will depend on the findings of the investigation and subsequent legal proceedings.
Joint Teams Conduct Detailed Audit
The seriousness of the matter has led to a wider investigation involving banking and law-enforcement agencies.
A joint team comprising officials from the RBI and PNB has reportedly been involved in a detailed audit and verification of the currency chest.
An additional RBI team was also reportedly called from Lucknow to assist with the investigation.
At the same time, Saharanpur Police has formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to examine the criminal aspects of the case.
Forensic investigators have also reportedly examined the currency chest and relevant documents, collecting fingerprints and other potentially important digital and physical evidence.
Police Investigating Missing Original Currency
One of the key questions before investigators is whether genuine currency was removed from the currency chest and replaced with counterfeit notes.
Police are reportedly examining CCTV footage, bank records, currency movement records and other evidence to determine how the suspected counterfeit notes reached the secured facility.
Investigators are also attempting to establish when the alleged replacement or manipulation took place and whether more people were involved.
FIR Registered
An FIR has reportedly been registered in connection with the alleged irregularities at the PNB currency chest.
According to preliminary information, the FIR initially mentioned an alleged embezzlement of approximately ₹7.40 crore.
However, officials have indicated that the counting process is still continuing and that the final figure will be communicated once the bank provides verified official numbers.
Police teams are also conducting searches to locate individuals who may be connected with the alleged financial irregularities.
Investigation Still Underway
Authorities have not yet released a final investigation report explaining exactly how the suspected counterfeit currency entered the currency chest.
The central questions being investigated include:
- How did the suspected counterfeit notes enter the currency chest?
- When did the alleged exchange of genuine notes take place?
- How much genuine currency is actually missing?
- Who had access to the currency chest?
- Were bank procedures deliberately bypassed?
- Were more people involved in the alleged operation?
- Where did the missing money go?
Until the investigation and forensic verification are completed, the exact scale of the alleged fraud and the responsibility of individual persons cannot be conclusively established.
A Serious Question for Banking Security
The alleged discovery of such a large quantity of suspected counterfeit currency inside a bank currency chest has raised concerns about internal controls, cash verification systems and security procedures.
Currency chests are critical components of the banking system because they handle large volumes of cash and play an important role in the distribution and management of currency.
If the allegations are confirmed, the case could raise serious questions about the effectiveness of internal checks and the monitoring mechanisms used in high-security cash facilities.
For now, the RBI, PNB and police authorities are continuing their investigations. The final official figures and findings are expected to provide a clearer picture of the alleged fraud, the amount of genuine currency missing and the individuals responsible.
Aath Kal will continue to bring verified updates as more information becomes available.
